A life-long Christian Scientist, Mary attended the Christian Science Sunday School in Grants Pass, Oregon. She joined The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, and First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Grants Pass before she went to college. She is currently an active, participating member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in La Cañada Flintridge, California.
In 2007, Mary entered the public practice of Christian Science. She began advertising in The Christian Science Journal a year later. In 2012, she attended Normal Class and was certified as a teacher of Christian Science by the Board of Education of The Mother Church. Her classes and pupils' association meetings are held in July in the Pasadena area.
Most of the articles and testimonies that Mary has written for The Christian Science Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Christian Science Monitor may be found by searching JSH-Online (subscription required) for the names "Mary Bothwell" and "Mary Lucille Brownell". Alternatively, articles and testimonies in the Journal and Sentinel are included in the annual bound volumes of these magazines in most Christian Science Reading Rooms.

Mary earned a bachelor of science in physics from Principia College and a master of business administration from the University of California at Los Angeles. Prior to becoming a full-time Christian Science practitioner, she worked for the California Institute of Technology at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
Her interests are broad. She enjoys gourmet cooking, reading, symphonic music, opera, "soft" adventure travel, and learning Spanish.
